This prayer card includes an image of a modern icon titled “Purgatory, The Promise of God’s Mercy.” The original icon hangs for public veneration in the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The famous penitential prayer on the back comes from Psalm 130, traditionally known as the De profundis ("Out of the depths”), a prayer used since ancient times for the faithful departed.
Prayer on Back:
Prayer for Pardon and Mercy
I
Out of the depths I call to you, Lord;
Lord, hear my cry!
May your ears be attentive
to my cry for mercy.
If you, Lord, keep account of sins,
Lord, who can stand?
But with you is forgiveness
and so you are revered.
II
I wait for the Lord,
my soul waits
and I hope for his word.
My soul looks for the Lord
more than sentinels for daybreak.
More than sentinels for daybreak,
let Israel hope in the Lord,
For with the Lord is mercy,
with him is plenteous redemption ...
— Psalm 130
